Description

A 5-part motet by the Franco-Flemish composer Rinaldo del Mel (ca. 1554 – ca. 1598).

Text

Domine, non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum: sed tantum dic verbo, et sanabitur anima mea.

Lord I am not worthy, that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.

Music in Context

Roman Catholics believe in the true presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. This prayer echoes the story of the Roman centurion (Matthew 8:8; where he asked Jesus to heal his servant), symbolising the humble plea inviting Christ entering into one’s soul. In traditional rites, the presiding priest and the recipient of Holy Communion recite this prayer three times – acknowledging human sin and the need for forgiveness and mercy, as well as hope and faith into Christ.

Guidance for Liturigical Use

Choir Directors may choose to program this motet at reception of Holy Communion.
