Description
Rinaldo del Mel (ca. 1554 – ca. 1598) was born in Mechlin and entered the choir school at St. Rombaut’s Cathedral in 1562. He was active in main cities of Europe such as Lisbon, Rome and Antwerp. There were claims of del Mel being Palestrina’s student. This motet for 5 voices comes from a handwritten German source dated 1593: del Mel was in Liège serving Bavarian nobility, which serves as a possible explanation to such provenance. Set to the response to the Ecce Agnus Dei (Behold the Lamb of God) after the priest completed the fraction, it is more than appropriate to sing this at the distribution of Holy Communion.
